An instrument that signifies an ownership position (called equity) in a corporation, and represents a claim on its proportional share in the corporation's assets and profits .

In order to determine which type to invest in, you have to first determine what you want the stock to do for you. Do you plan to hold the security long-term, or are you a day trader? and the two common types ARE :
